Record the clearest demo you can, not the fanciest
A phone recording with a strong performance can communicate more than a complicated home production full of temporary ideas. The demo should make the song understandable: melody, lyrics, chord movement, basic structure and the energy you imagine.
Write down the structure
Label the intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge and other sections. This simple exercise often exposes repeated sections that are too long, transitions that do not earn their place and arrangements that rely on production to create movement the song itself does not yet have.
Bring references with explanations
Two or three reference tracks are useful when you explain what you are borrowing from each. You might like the drum size in one track, the intimacy of the vocal in another and the restraint of the arrangement in a third. “Make it sound like this” is less useful than explaining which qualities matter.
Know what must not be lost
Artists often describe what they want added but not what they are afraid of losing. Tell the producer which lyric, performance quality, guitar motif or emotional character feels essential. This gives the producer a boundary around experimentation.
Do not lock every production decision too early
If you have already programmed every drum fill, doubled every guitar and chosen every sound, you may have accidentally removed the space in which a producer can help. Bring ideas, but leave room for the project to improve.
Collect practical information
If the project is moving toward recording, know the song key, approximate BPM, current collaborators, budget range, deadline and where existing files live. None of this needs to be perfect, but it helps the producer judge scope.
Prepare one useful question
What is the one thing about the song you are least certain about? Structure? Chorus impact? Genre? Vocal delivery? Instrumentation? A clear uncertainty often gives the first production conversation somewhere productive to begin.
